Abstract

A breakthrough in trenchless pipe installation combined pipe bursting and horizontal directional drilling. The patented system uses a special downhole toll and horizontal drill unit that grinds and removes pipe at the same time that new pipe is being installed. It has been found to be especially useful for gravity flow systems where the existing pipe's alignment is the desired alignment for the replacement system, The grinding and removal system can treat clay pipe, as well as pipe made of other materials. The pipe bursting tool is similar to a compaction reamer.
