Abstract

The paper describes a series of tests conducted on falling weight deflectometer-based nondestructive structural evaluations of airport pavements. A strain based method was developed for asphalt pavements. The modulus of elasticity of each layer was first estimated, and the strains for the design load were calculated and the results were compared to the strain criteria. For concrete pavements, the structural integrity was evaluated by calculating the concrete stress, and the load transfer was measured at the joint and the extent of voids under the concrete slab at the joint was estimated. As a result of these tests, the system for both asphalt and concrete pavements was built and has been used in Japan as a practical measure.
