Abstract
Originally set up in 1974, the objective of the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive field survey unit (fsu) was the provision of data in order to re-organise routes, restructure traffic corridors, provide special bus services, analyse passengers and revenue, and, establish passenger characteristics for marketing processes. The paper is concerned with the area studies section of the fsu in its programme of studies which required the adoption of a household survey approach involving both household and on-bus/on-rail survey methods to establish patterns of movement, user attitudes and desired changes. Studies carried out in the last 5 years using this approach technique and their findings are discussed. For the covering abstract see UMTRIS 377151.
