Abstract

The RACV, representing a membership of more than 1.4 million, has been calling for a review of speed limits in Victoria for a number of years. We have welcomed the Social Development Committee's recommendations on speed limits and enforcement. The RACV has consistently argued that rational speed limits which reflect road characteristics will achieve far greater compliance with posted speed limits and this would reduce the need for enforcement. However, the RACV has voiced concern over one of the recommendations about the proposed reduction in residential street speed limits to 40 km/h. These concerns may not be serious if the intention of the SDC's recommendation was dearly understood. In its submission to the SDC, the RACV supported a reduction in local road speed limits to 50 km/h with 40 km/h being reserved for specific locations on residential streets such as near school crossings.
