Abstract
A composite model which can be used for the prediction of freeway traffic performance as a function of traffic demand pattern and freeway design (simulation model) is described. Besides it is possible, by application of a priority entry control strategy at freeway on-ramps, to optimize the freeway traffic performance for some objective function (optimization model). The freeway-section Zoetermeer-den Haag is used for testing the model in respect to Dutch freeways. After calibrating the simulation model, some investigations were undertaken, assuming changes in the freeway capacity (bottlenecks) as well as the actual demand pattern. In chapter 7 and 8 the most important results obtained for the various alternatives are discussed. /TRRL/
