Abstract
This paper attempts to identify various traffic problems warranting segregation and the tools needed. Traffic problems faced in India in urban areas have been discussed in relation to land use, destination, type of traffic, direction, grade, moving and parked vehicles and time. Various methods have been described for regulation of traffic at intersections and to improve the capacity of existing highways. The use of bypasses, cycle tracks and cycle ways, cycle subways, pedestrian ways and elevated footways, service streets, channelisation, divided carriageway, oneway streets, signal phasing etc has been suggested to improve urban traffic. It is concluded that the capacity of existing highways could be increased by as much as 20-40 percent through the segregation of traffic and other engineering measures. This would be significant improvement considering the extreme paucity of funds with local implementing agencies. (TRRL)
