TRAFFIC CALMING IN SALT LAKE CITY - FOUR CASE STUDIES

Like many other cities in the 90's, Salt Lake City experienced a number of growing pains. This growth has bough an increase in traffic to the city. As traffic increased on our freeways, motorists have looked for alternative ways to commute. This has put added pressure on arterial streets, collector streets and finally on our neighborhood streets. Because commuter traffic lacks connection with the local neighborhood they have a tendency to travel at a higher rate of speed Traffic calming, which is being incorporated into a broader program of traffic management, will play an important role in our neighborhoods to influence through-traffic to stay on arterial streets and local traffic to drive safely within the speed limit. The aim of the program is directed at creating a more livable environment for the residents of these neighborhoods. This paper will cover four neighborhood case studies where traffic-calming measures were tested in 1999.
