Abstract

This paper discusses two IVHS demonstration projects currently underway: (1) the Heavy Vehicle Electronic License Plate (H.E.L.P.) Program and Crescent Demonstration Project, and (2) the Advantage I-75 Program. These two programs, the leading CVO (Commercial Vehicle Operations) elements of the strategic planning document, exemplify the technological elements and applications of an integrated system for managing large trucks operating on the highway network. One objective of CVO is to significantly reduce fatalities in accidents and their cost to society. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 provides the foundation of the vision and Program framework for IVHS and CVO.
