THE CONTINUOUS PLANNING OF ARTERIAL AND REGIONAL ROAD NETWORKS

The article stresses the need for organizing expert services on federal, republic and regional levels, which would, within the framework of the self-management common interest association, carry out work connected with these very important problems. On the basis of present day conditions, knowledge, and experiences, a reconsideration of the fixing of criteria is suggested to settle the question of arterial and regional road network, for which long-term and medium-term plans should be made. Particular stress is laid upon the integration of the arterial and other road networks with land use and town planning. It is suggested that a survey of road networks should be carried out and its results made available. The need for an agreed approach to the subject of road networks is emphasised, and care should be exercised regarding the human environment. A critical view is given with regard to criteria accepted and applied until now in the case of the arterial network, with a suggestion for some additions which would improve them. (TRRL)
