Abstract
The Federal Highway Administration's Joint Program Office for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is launching an effort to apply ITS technologies to intermodal freight operations. The initial stages of the project will focus on assessing the current condition of the intermodal freight industry with respect to critical freight movement problems, key bottlenecks, operations, information exchange, and communication systems. Future roles for the federal government may include supporting the development of data standards for intermodal information and communication systems, providing funding for the expansion of information and physical infrastructure systems, supporting regional and corridor efforts to increase intermodal efficiency, and streamlining government regulations.
