Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) offer the opportunity to integrate the transportation through advanced traffic management systems, advanced traveler information systems, advanced vehicle control and safety systems, and other applications. Advocating system thinking, the author outlines promising directions for ITS research and development, which should proceed in tandem with deployment and operations.
