Abstract
Since the Transport Act 1980 has relaxed controls over voluntary transport schemes and community initiatives, the most significant formal voluntary scheme is the social car scheme, an organized volunteer taxi service which must not be confused with car sharing. Details are given of the organization, advertising and operation of social car schemes. Special mention is made of the social car schemes in Dyfed, their role, financial performance, and patronage.
