Abstract

The dynamic modulus of asphalt concrete is an essential parameter in any pavement design method. The new AASHTO 2002 pavement design method addresses this issue by using asphalt binder viscosity as one of the parameters in predicting asphalt concrete dynamic modulus. Also, many studies indicate that asphalt binder viscosity is a better parameter in evaluating the rutting potential of asphalt concrete. This paper investigates a number of different approaches of calculating viscosity from other viscoelastic parameters and proposes the use of a simple method based on rheological master curves.
