PROMETHEUS - SAFE AND EFFECTIVE MOBILITY IN EUROPE ACHIEVEMENTS AND DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

With PROMETHEUS, the automobile industry in Western Europe, initiator of the program, has undertaken to contribute to the improvement of transportation systems and traffic in Europe. To optimize the overall transportation network PROMETHEUS concentrates its activities on the improvement of road transportation with the following goals: to apply information and communication technology to integrate individual (i.e. traffic) control and collective (i.e. traffic) control, and to integrate road transportation with other modes of transport. PROMETHEUS has the potential for significant improvements in transport efficiency, environmental compatibility and traffic safety by providing information for optimal use of the system 'transportation' and by supporting the vehicle driver in his or her driving task.
