Abstract
Light rail transit systems are considered necessary in urban areas where the number of buses that can be run is currently or soon will be insufficient to meet demand. The integration of such transit systems with connecting bus services is considered essential. A model to identify corridors for mass transit, and the depiction of demand as a spider network are described. A light rail transit system is proposed for four major corridors in Hyderabad with a four-minute headway. Patronage is predicted using modal split analysis. The system should reduce the number of buses required by 656, in addition to savings in energy conservation and road widening programmes. The re-routing of buses to connect with the light rail system is proposed.
