Abstract
In this paper, recent advances in roadside safety are reviewed, and areas for further study are outlined to enhance and improve roadside safety. With the publication of the 2002 AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, a current reference is now available to the transportation designers as they look beyond the roadway to the roadside. The Guide provides the better understanding of roadside safety by reflecting the best technology and research completed to date. The paper also summarizes significant NCHRP studies and topics being researched that may continue to provide breakthroughs in roadside safety.
