Abstract
As a necessary part of rail maintenance, rail grinding techniques must adapt to the changes in railroad conditions. When designing rail profiles, one must take into account existing track traffic, environmental conditions, and accommodate different wheel profiles. New gauge rail profiles have reduced the development of wheel hollowing and false flange. Profiles are being designed to improve the life-span of rails by avoiding the excessive reshaping of rails from grinding on site.
