Abstract

The purpose of this brief paper is to review research currently underway at the University of Pennsylvania dealing with potential applications of advanced vehicle monitoring and control (AVMC) systems. This effort, jointly supported by the Advanced Technology Center of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Mobile Satellite Corp., focuses on three major areas: (1) Trucking operations; (2) Satellite telecommunication systems; and (3) Man-machine interfaces. This research is part of a larger interdisciplinary transportation research program which is addressing the entire area of AVMC systems in ground transportation, including railroad applications and applications in related areas such as public safety and emergency services.
