Abstract

A considerable part of urban traffic is caused by in-going and outgoing deliveries to/from retail shops in the Central Business Districts (CBD), to/from larger shopping areas and city markets. So it must become an important goal to improve the coordination of this type of traffic. City logistics concepts are an essential part of the mobility management of urban freight transport especially to improve the saturation of freight vehicles. The basic thought of city logistics is to coordinate and to bundle the deliveries of freight and goods. A test in the German City of Kassel (approximately 200,000 inhabitants) has shown that by coordinating and bundling goods, urban traffic can be reduced although there are many problems that need to be solved.
