Abstract
This article outlines the development projects in progress across the UK railway network, organised by infrastructure company Network Rail. The first stage of upgrading on the West Coast Main Line enables tilting trains to run at 200 kilometres per hour. Further work is in progress, including high quality track renewals, and train detection by axle counters. The final stage of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link is aimed at completion in 2007. Other projects around London include power upgrading to introduce a new generation of 160 kph trains and enhancement work to rail transport in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games. The major project to replace the fixed telecommunication network has just started which will enable use of GSM-R communication and this will pave the way for the European Train Control System and Eurointerlocking. Network Rail has reviewed its management structure and moved from regional control to national.
