Abstract
MTA New York City Transit established MetroCard Mobile Sales to meet a targeted outreach need - to make the MetroCard easier to use for Reduced-Fare (RF) customers, a group that includes senior citizens, people with disabilities and bus-only riders. This program is unique among transit systems by employing two 40-foot buses and three 20-foot vans that are fully functional mobile sales and customer service centers serving the five boroughs of New York City plus Nassau County. The program was introduced in 1996 to assist New York City's 1.5 million RF applicants, and since then, more than 100,000 RF customers, the equivalent of a medium size city, have obtained their MetroCard.
