Abstract
This paper reviews the progress of the road weather information system (RWIS) development, analyses the system components and main application scope of RWIS, and summarizes the experience and trends of the research and applications in the developed countries. The paper comprehensively reviews the progress of RWIS development on Chinese highways and summarizes the problems and gaps of RWIS research and applications on Chinese highways. Considering the on-going research and demonstration projects, the paper gives a set of recommendations and proposals to promote the application of RWIS on Chinese highways.
