Abstract

This article is presented in three successive monthly parts and is a project of the Department of Computer Aided Ship Design of the Technical University of Hannover in its aim to promote computer applications in ship design. The article describes the bigger and more generally applicable Fortran programs, which are documented and will be maintained. These are run on a CD Cyber 76 computer which consists of a small core memory (SCM) as working storage and a large core memory (LCM) as secondary storage. The LCM has automatic paging facilities and if a machine without automatic paging facilities or virtual memory is used, both LCM and SCM storage requirements have to be satisfied by the directly accessible working storage of that machine. The Hydrostatics program ARCHIMEDES computes hydrostatic data, cross curves of stability, tank capacities, floodable lengths, damage trim and stability, longitudinal strength, grain stability etc. The Lines Fairing program EUKLID is the most-applied lines fairing program in Germany and is also used under the name STRAK. The Lines Design program PRAXITELES generates a new hull form by modifying a given hull. Input data of the Plate Development program ABWIK are coordinate triples of some 50 points on the seams and butts as well as in the interior of a curved shell plate. Various other programs are also described. Problem formulation is handled by the design compiler CHWARISMI-1 which accepts descriptions of design problems as input and converts them into Fortran programs solving these problems. In this way a number of design and electronic circuit design have been programmed in a very concise and economic manner. The CHWARISMI-II compiler further simplifies the formulation of complex design problems by enabling the programmer to define sets of equations and to store them in a computer library. These sets of equations may be used to define other sets or, ultimately, they may be called during the formulation of a design problem. The precompiler DECIS accepts tables used to solve problems involving a complex interaction of conditions. The program FAHRTS deals with general-cargo ship operation simulation for voyages between up to 20 ports, allowing determination of operational and economic results of the voyage. The ARCHIMEDES program is superceded by the TIDES program for launching calculations as the latter computes the effects of waves generated by launching on the level of way-end pressures. A list of relevant references is given after each program description.
