Abstract

This chapter presents the essential elements of traffic safety analysis. The topics covered include: (1) basic concepts of road accidents statistics; (2) safety performance functions and the empirical Bayes method for estimating safety; (3) identifying and analyzing hazardous road locations; (4) the effects on road safety of some common traffic engineering measures; (5) how to assess the quality of road safety evaluation studies; and (5) formal technical for setting priorities for safety treatments.
