Abstract
This paper takes a fictional, but not unrealistic look at the life of an ill conceived drainage system constructed to lower a watertable that became evident during construction of a roadway. The performance of the roadway and drainage system is observed from the day the drain is constructed until the road eventually achieves its life. In this particular example many inadequacies of the drain design are found to affect the performance of the roadway. Each deficiency is corrected as its nature becomes apparent. In the latter parts of this paper some construction and maintenance operations performed on the drainage system that may affect the performance of the drain are discussed in general terms (a). This paper wa presented in Session 2 Drainage--Or What to Do with Excess Water. (TRRL)
