Abstract

This article describes an approach to regional transportation planning developed by the state of Massachusetts through its Mass Transportation Commission. The success of this approach is illustrated by the Commission's $10.2-million mass transportation demonstration and regional planning program financed by $7.6 million in federal grants and $2.6 million in state appropriations. The features that make this approach unique are detailed, the preliminary regional survey is described, the nature and goals of the planning project are discussed, and time estimates and future program considerations are provided.
