Abstract

In future the railways will continue to provide long distance freight and passenger services, as well as passenger transport in densely populated areas, thanks to a modern network using the most advanced technology. The investment policy implemented by the railways throughout Europe from 1970 onwards concerned mainly the construction of new lines, electrification, rolling stock and signaling upgrading. These policies should be developed if the railways are to make up the ground lost to road transport in this field.
