Aviation is a recent form of travel and this chapter emphasizes the design of systems to control commercial and general aviation in the United States. Our military and aviators of other nations also require air traffic control (ATC) systems. But they are basically the same technology as used by the United States civil system. The history of how civil aviation is also described.
