ROAD SAFETY AND TELEMATICS: HOW FAR HAVE WE GOT?

Abstract

Telematics already brought very significant results for improving traffic efficiency and driver's comfort. Now new perspectives are opening up in terms of road safety. The present paper provides an overview of the different applications which could be useful for improving road safety, using examples and giving figures from France and other countries. For a sake of clarity, we distinguish those applications that are specifically designed for road safety, from applications designed for another purpose, but which might have consequences on road safety nevertheless.
