Road maintenance operations

This paper summarises the organisation and operational procedures as applied to the maintenance of roads under the control of the Main Roads Department of Western Australia. Distinction is made between normal day to day maintenance (routine maintenance), more extensive maintenance which operationally resembles construction work (specific maintenance), and restoration or unforeseen maintenance. Typical repair methods as practised by the department are described and some common road defects and problems are also discussed and illustrated from a maintenance viewpoint (a).
