Abstract
The history of the urban street car and railway system in Philadelphia, USA is described. The historical origins of the street cars, street car tunnel, feeder lines, subway and elevated railways, the suburban 'main-line' railways, the trolleybuses, the light rail lines to the outer suburbs, and the lines to New Jersey are discussed. The fate of each element during the 30 years of direct public ownership and unified operation is outlined. The purchase of the Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) car by the Philadelphia Rail Transit Company is described. Details are given of the remaining street car and light rail system that is in existence in 2006.
