Abstract

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) can vouch for the utility of cement stabilized open-graded base (CSOGB), which was used during reconstruction of Interstate 90 near Stoughton. The use of CSOGB provided drainage for the pavement designer and gave the contractor a working platform and haul road. The Stoughton project became a research experiment for WisDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Wisconsin Concrete Pavement Association. Because only limited information was available on CSOGB, the team of agencies performed field tests and later presented data at a Transportation Research Board annual meeting. Constructability and physical properties of CSOGB were the focus of the investigation. This article details the I-90 construction process and CSOGB field testing.
