TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES - SOME ISSUES

This article describes several methods of traffic calming (speed control) and discusses their use on roads in India. The measures described are road humps, rumble strips, road narrowing, vehicle lane staggering and roundabouts at junctions. Many of these require adaptation for safe and effective use on Indian roads as the proportions of non-motorised, car, and lorry traffic are different from those in developed countries. Traffic calming measures should be carefully planned and monitored, and driver education and traffic law enforcement must be seen as equally important to ensure traffic safety.
