Abstract

This paper briefly outlines the history and current development of the role of the bus and how roadspace re-allocation particularly through bus priority is used to increase public transport demand in London. Recently changed transport policy is examined particularly encouraging increased use of public transport plus bus and pedestrian priority. Implementation of measures on the London Bus Priority Network (LBPN) and Priority (Red) Route Network (PRN) using previous policies and strategies is outlined along with their potential development using the new policies. The paper concludes with a discussion on the part Intensified Bus Priorities and advanced technology applications could play in the future within a package of complementary traffic and parking restraint measures. The bus requires far higher levels of priority than is presently the case to meet the changed policy objectives and to produce the mode shift from private to public transport and traffic reduction.
