Abstract

Based on the results of previous phases in the development of a highway design optimization program, the feasibility of making a partial shift in the horizontal alignment needed to be investigated. For this purpose new models and further elements in the system were developed which allowed for such a shift to be made in conjunction with optimization of the vertical alignment hitherto undertaken. The heart of the work lay in the development of the model. The development of the system was carried out taking account of the integrated data flow required. The new element of the system was subjected to an extensive series of tests. The results of these tests indicated the possibilities and limitations of making a partial shift, for which purpose a practical method is submitted. (TRRL)
