Abstract

Matthew Rose reflects on his first 100 days as President of BNSF, the second-largest railroad in North America. He cited cross-training, team-building, lean management, such as policies that reduced fuel consumption by nearly 2%, and customer outreach and retail innovations. One is CarsOnTrack, where individuals can book automobile rail shipments over the Internet. Future issues include how BNSF will fare under the new merger rules anticipated from the Surface Transportation Board.
