Abstract
Three years ago, MIT was named one of the ten universities to take the lead in establishing a four-year, $40 million grants-matching program for the US Department of Transportation. Designed to attract the nation's best talent to the study of transportation, the University Centers Program set up center in each of the ten standard federal regions to provide national resource for research and education in transportation. MIT was designated as lead university for Region One, comprised of Harvard and New England's six state universities. The theme for this year, as last year, will be Transportation Management, Policy and Operations. The focus will be on multimodal strategies to alleviate congestion; technological innovations in surface transportation; formulation and implementation of public policy; and transportation systems management. This article looks at the education, research and technology transfer components of this year's program.
