Abstract

This article addresses the question: what can transit really do by stepping away from a technology orientation and focusing instead on some fundamental driving forces that determine the success or failure of proposed transit solution? It looks a transit use; transit ridership and its share of travel; how transit use in the suburbs can be improved; and, finally, it looks at transit as a part of a package that contains all other features in the urban area.
