U.S. Coast Guard’s Marine Investigations Program: A world-wide impact

Marine casualty investigations of the United States Coast Guard have global impacts. The U.S. Coast Guard works with the United Nations International Maritime Organization to ensure maritime safety and address marine pollution. Other agencies that the U.S. Coast Guard encourages and supports include the International Maritime Safety Security Environment Academy, and the Marine Accident Investigators International Forum. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard conducts routine marine casualty investigations in the United States. The U.S. Coast Guard receives reports of about 4,500 marine casualties a year. Many of these involved foreign-flagged ships, so the U.S. Coast Guard is in frequent contact with it's foreign investigative counterparts.
