Abstract
There is very limited knowledge of the effects of urban road investments on either the road freight transport sector or the general economy. This deficiency must be urgently addressed so that appropriate procedures can be developed for considering freight transport in urban investment decisions. One means of gaining a better understanding of the freight related impacts of urban road investments and identifying desired procedures is to measure the impacts of a particular road improvement on the road freight system and the wider freight sector. The opening of the gateway bridge in Brisbane in 1986 provided an opportunity for this.
