Abstract

The world's first turbocharged direct-injection diesel passenger car engine has 3 cylinders in line, 80 mm bore and 92 mm stroke for a total cylinder capacity of 1.386 l. The engine's name is 3.80.92 t, and it is now produced in a pilot plant whose production capacity of industrially produced 3.80.92 t engines is mainly reserved for individual applications and large scale tests by Elko licensees. Prototype 3.80.92 t engines have minimum specific fuel consumption of 208 g/kwh combined with more than 15 bar maximum bmep and a maximum power of over 65 kw when intercooling is applied. Further outstanding characteristics are low emissions, multifuel suitability, low noise and long life. The heat balance shows that the amount of heat going into the coolant is very much reduced in favour of effective engine power, and the involved technology does not require expensive materials or new and expensive manufacturing methods. The most important new means to obtain these favourable results are the single jet stratified charge combustion system, the new patented design of the most important engine components for an important reduction in heat losses and increased resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses, the turbocharging system without wastegate or boost pressure controlled governor, the cooling system without air or water cooling of any kind, and the low cost fuel injection equipment.
