Abstract
Although India was slower to develop urban public transit systems than many other countries, this has changed in the last decade. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was formed in 1995 to build a metro system in New Delhi. Today, the Delhi metro system spreads across 65 km and has provided significant environmental and social benefits to the city. The first phase of the metro system project was completed in November 2006. A second phase, which will add about 125 km to the system, is planned for completion by 2010. Although the project has been technically complex, the system has won admiration for its use of technology, punctuality rate, and unique project management techniques.
