Abstract
Motor vehicle crashes result in approximately 6,000 pedestrian injuries and 1,000 pedestrian deaths each year in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. More than one-fourth of the severe crashes in the country are pedestrian related. The purpose of this study is to investigate pedestrian-vehicle crashes in the fast growing city of Riyadh with the following objectives in mind: to analyze pedestrian collisions with regard to their causes, characteristics, and most common patterns. The study used data from 638 pedestrian-vehicle crashes reported by police. Results of the analysis are provided and some international comparisons are provided, in particular with the US and UK.
