Abstract

This article discusses the shift from passive to active vehicle safety that has been taking place, in order to increase traffic safety and decrease traffic accidents. Some technologies that reflect the active safety approach to vehicle safety include: anti-lock braking systems, electronic stability control, distance control, lane-departure warning systems, and pre-crash sensors. A Total Safety approach combines passive safety, such as airbags and seat belts, with active safety, such as a collision avoidance system. The combination of passive and active safety, along with the integration of all safety systems, is the epitome of vehicle safety.
