Abstract

A series of electric locomotives with three-phase propulsion was put into service in the Ruhr region of West Germany in 1976. The operating conditions and the traction demands of the motive power units are explained. The body of the locomotive is described, with emphasis on the three-phase propulsion technique which is claimed to have been used for the first time in an electric locomotive. The first experiences on hand show that the motive power units meet fully the expectations placed on them.
