Abstract
This article relates how truck fleet managers are relying on sophisticated Global Positioning System (GPS)-based asset and maintenance management programs to plan, track, and monitor their fleet in real time. Vehicles are equipped with a GPS receiver and antenna that calculates their position. A wireless communications device is used for communicating position information back to a central location. A variety of data can be made available, such as cycle time and the number of loads per day. Fleets can be monitored online on a secure Web site, with a map displaying work areas and fleet positions. These GPS-based systems easily lend themselves to creating efficient and cost-effective operations, as well as an increase in productivity as providing a sense of security.
