Abstract

The International Maritime Organisation recommends the shipbuilder to estimate the manoeuvring performance of each individual ship and provide if for the ship operator. The current practices of predicting ship manoeuvrability are use of database, model tests and prediction by means of numerical simulation of manoeuvring motions. In this paper, the usefulness of numerical simulation for the purpose of estimation of manoeuvring performance is discussed with the prediction accuracy being emphasised in order to clarify the present state of prediction method of ship manoeuvrability. Finally, the future tasks pursued to enhance the usefulness of prediction method are briefly mentioned.
