Abstract
This article recounts the experiences of a number of cities that are in favor of monorail transit. Personal rapid transit (PRT) technology is also discussed. Monorail's critics concede that, because it weighs less, it can be elevated less expensively than rail. Elevated systems can be built quickly; because they don't have to interact with traffic and pedestrians, they can be automated, eliminating the driver salaries that are conventional transit's biggest operating expense.
