Abstract

This paper presents perspectives of Smart Cards in mass transit applications. Smart Cards in mass transit represent one of the most important tools to facilitate travel on public transit. The benefits of Smart Cards in mass transit are highlighted and analyzed. The key to the future of Smart Cards is the development of systems that not only provide a payment and information mechanism for transportation services, but also provide a payment and information mechanism for many goods and services. The application of Smart Cards as a fare collection technology for vehicle-based and person-based transit applications is presented. The comprehensive evolution of Smart Cards in mass transit is also presented.
