Abstract
This report shows how to investigate the market for a casual carpooling system on Interstate 495 (the Beltway), a four lane highway serving the suburbs of Washington, D.C. The focus is: What is the number of coincidental trips generated by the daily Beltway commutes? Furthermore, can these trips in conjunction with commuters' attitudes support some form of a casual carpooling system? Coincidental refers to trips taken at the same time with the same origins and destinations; parallel trips in both time and space. It should be emphasized that the goal of this report is to produce a methodology for performing a market analysis for a casual carpooling system. The data herein are based upon only one Beltway exit. Furthermore, the casual carpooling system would likely be computerized.
